Slavens - Mary

Mrs. Mary Slavens died at her home on Perry Street last Monday at eleven o’clock after an illness of several months. She was eighty three years of age and a member of the Christian Church. The funeral occurred Wednesday, interment being at the Masonic Cemetery.

Miss Mary Brannock was born in Harrison County, Ky., April 4, 1815, and died at Crawfordsville, Ind., March 1, 1897, aged 82 years, 10 months and 26 days. She was married to David Shanks when about 23 years of age. Five daughters were the fruit of this union, four of which survive her, one having preceded her to heaven about 20 years ago. The daughters living are Mrs. Fannie Vancleave, Parkersburg; Mrs. Sarah Taylor, Cynthiana, Ky.; Mrs. Susan Brackney, Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Nellie Jones, Howard, Kan. Her husband died about 12 years after their marriage, leaving her with five small children. She with the children came to the state of Indiana where she has resided till the time of her death. About 33 years ago she was married to Grandfather Slavens of Montgomery County, they living together until his death eight years ago. She was converted when quite young and joined the M. E. Church, living a consistent Christian life in that church until after her second marriage. She with her husband joined the Christian Church at Whitesville, remaining a member of the same till her death. For the past three months she had been living with one of her granddaughters in Crawfordsville. She had not been real well for three or four weeks before she was confined to her bed. She said she did not want to get well, as she had lived long enough and often expressed her desire to go and meet her loved ones which she said had gone home. Her faculties of mind were clear and her faith strong. She made long and earnest prayers for her children and grandchildren, and said she had a place prepared for us all. She lived to a ripe old age, almost thirteen years beyond the scriptural “three score and ten.” Jesus was her life companion; neither did he forsake her in the valley of death. Loved and loving she sweetly fell asleep to awaken on that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise and the glory of His resurrection share. The funeral was preached at the house on March 3 by the Rev. J. F. McDaniel, a M. E. minister of Crawfordsville, using the text found in 2 Cor. 5 chapter, 1 verse. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.
